Synopsis

The Luigi Antonini Organ Review aims to enhance the specificities of the ancient Italian organ in the context of a territory that presents valuable examples of it; in this edition, compositions for harpsichord and voice are also proposed. A path is traced through characteristic pages of the relevant musical literature, authentically revived thanks both to the absolute prominence of the artists involved, including world-renowned ones, and to the peculiarities of the chosen instruments.

Musical coordinator of the review is Maestro Paolo Sebastiani, chair of Harmony Theory and Analysis at the Conservatory "to. Casella" of L'Aquila.

GUIDED TOUR | History and art in the monumental complex of San Ponziano and the surrounding area

The monumental complex, dedicated to the patron saint of Spoleto, consists of the basilica and the Benedictine monastery, originally a male and later a female one. In 1788, work was done on a design by Roman architect Giuseppe Valadier; however, the structure had already previously undergone adjustments to meet post-Tridentine instances. The facade retained its Romanesque appearance, with the portal adorned with mosaic inserts and symbols of the evangelists around the rose window; the interior elaborated according to the new neoclassical taste was halved in length to carve out the choir.

The crypt is adorned with 14th-15th century frescoes and retains its original appearance. Recent is the discovery of a tomb slab on one of the sarcophagi arranged in the crypt: it has a Lombard name engraved on it, Agipertus; this is the first archaeologically ascertained Spoleto Lombard. Inside the monastery is kept the skull of St. Pontian, which is still carried in procession on January 14. The relic is on display until the following Sunday during celebrations for the feast of the martyr-patron. Numerous works of art and sacred furnishings owned by the monastery were alienated to following the Napoleonic suppression of 1810 and the 1860 demanations.
