Variazioni enarmoniche
In King Size Marthaler is truly at his best: in a hotel room a couple is trying to sleep as they discover that their dreams and their bed are both too big... The show combines the notes of Schumann and Dowland, Wagner and Mozart with the music of The Kinks and The Jackson Five.
"Enharmonic" refers to a technique of musical composition that allows the same sound at the same pitch to be written in two different ways and thus having two different functions, as is the case with G-sharp and A-flat. Most composers of the last two centuries have made extensive use of this technique, most likely for a simple reason: it perfectly renders the idea of evolution and metamorphosis. And what is closer to life than these concepts? Does not every human relationship consist of an enharmonic bond of some kind? Every marriage, every secret love, every kiss?
And because this is a fact as obvious as it is mysterious, Christoph Marthaler and his ensemble engage in a kind of microsurgery on the brain, penetrate that dark place in which, in the middle of the night and in the deepest sleep, "enharmonic" processes find their strength.
The place of our night's rest is in perfect order, beautifully designed in the most delicate colors, and at its center towers the object of our desires: a king-size bed! Here, where the supreme intimacy of loving union merges with the total absence of sleep, we witness human transformations in their most intense and cruelest form.
And since it is always necessary to be in threes to follow the enharmonic variations of fidelity, devotion, joy and happiness, singers/actors Tora Augestad and Michael von der Heide are accompanied by the mysterious Mr. Dethleffsen - in the truest sense of the word... But who is the other person in the room, that lady of a certain age? Is she perhaps spying on them? Her true identity will remain a secret....
