With support from Anna Mahler Association, James Capper brings to Spoleto two new sculptures - ATLAS and TELESTEP - for a residency at Mahler & LeWitt Studios and an exhibition for Festival dei Due Mondi.
James Capper's sculptures employ the materials of mechanical engineering and the techniques of industrial design to develop the possibilities of sculpture and performance. to starting from conceptual sketches, Capper designs and builds self-propelled machines that dig, scratch and mark the materials on which they are used. These apparatuses are both sculpture and sculptural tools in action.

TELESTEP, a sculpture belonging to the "Mountaineering" group, is on display to Via Arco di Druso. Theopera is presented together to a video that artist Matthew Burris shot to Gubbio during the first two weeks of James Capper's stay in Umbria, showing how _TELESTEP _is tested by the artist in the Umbrian landscape.
ATLAS, commissioned from CGP London, with support from The Henry Moore Foundation, Arts Council England and The London Borough of Southwark, is a mobile sculpture that stands on a concrete plinth. Over time it sculpts its own base, with specially created "grinders' to that purpose. During the Festival, the sculpture moves every weekend from one site to another (St. Peter's Basilica, Piazza della Signoria and the Rocca Albonorziana). At each of the chosen locations, ATLAS for a few days molds, excavates and sculpts its concrete block on which the sculpture is placed. The plinths will then remain in their location for the duration of the Festival, waiting for the sculpture to finally arrive to sculpting them or displaying what remains after ATLAS' passage.
