IMMUNOLOGIA: UN SISTEMA PER LA SOPRAVVIVENZA
Immunology represents one of the most fascinating sciences, because of its complexity, its continuous and exceptional discoveries that are also fundamental to other fields of biomedicine (three Nobel Prizes were awarded to immunologists last year), and its cultural and intellectual basis (hypotheses and theories that make immunology an example of the close link between strictly biological mechanisms and thought)... Immunologists study the molecular and cellular events of immune responses that fight infection or cancer (vaccines...), or chronic inflammatory immunopathological processes (autoimmune diseases, allergies, atherosclerosis, diabetes...). They also learn from immunology itself how to fight infections, cancers, and chronic inflammatory diseases, with obvious repercussions for safeguarding human health. Immunology is a cross-cutting science that, to clinical level, is involved in many disciplines, such as rheumatology, gastroenterology, pediatrics, infectious disease, cardiology, etc. Thus, immunology turns out to be fundamental both for research on the mechanisms of various diseases and for the generation of innovative new treatments for these diseases.
