Il mito, sogno dell’umanità
Two "mythical" directors. , Pierpaolo Pasolini and John Houston, for a reflection on "myth, dream of humanity."
The 4th Review of Cinema and Psychoanalysis, to curated by Claudia Spadazzi and Fabio Castriota, under the patronage of the Italian Psychoanalytic Society, proposes the theme of myth, a narrative of origins, and how it fulfills the function of creatively representing the fundamental needs of cultures.
Ancient myths and modern myths will alternate in the Review. By Pasolini three absolute masterpieces will be proposed, to starting withOedipus Rex still " able to shake modern man like the Greeks his contemporaries (Freud, The Interpretation of Dreams)"; Medea interpreted from Maria Callas; the figure of Christ in the Gospel According to Matthew. Instead, three modern myths will be offered by John Houston: Marylin Monroe sex-symbol and icon of eternal youth; Moby Dick and the overcoming of extreme boundaries; and finally Montgomery Clift's little-known but extraordinary performance as a tormented Sigmund Freud at the dawn of the discovery of the unconscious.
What survives of ancient myth in contemporary times, and how does it articulate with a humanity that tends to to become increasingly culturally globalized, poorly differentiated in terms of sexual gender, and in which the dimension of the sacred is progressively thinning? And how do modern myths remain bound to the ancients, in symbolic terms, or do they rapidly mutate and transform, analogous to current modes of communication?
Producer Riccardo Tozzi, President of ANICA, directors Cristina Comencini and Pietro Cannizzaro, critic Italo Moscati, and psychoanalysts from the Italian Psychoanalytic Society (SPI) and the Italian Association of Psychoanalysis (AIPSI) Simona Argentieri, Claudio Arnetoli, Alessandro Bruni, Anna Ferruta, Paola Marion, and Mario Rossi Monti will discuss this issue.
