A magical relationship, that between music and cinema, as essential as is the relationship between images, sounds and colors. Andrea Griminelli pays tribute to the inimitable art of Nino Rota on the centenary of the birth of the great musician, the acknowledged "prince" of our cinema′s soundtracks.
ANDREA GRIMINELLI Acclaimed by critics and audiences alike for his sensitive interpretations and astonishing technique, Andrea Griminelli has been listed by the New York Times as one of the "eight emerging artists of the 1990s."
Approaching the flute at the age of ten, he studied with the legendary Jean-Pierre Rampal and Sir James Galway, who called him "the greatest flutist to rise to the forefront of the music scene from so many years." While studying with J. P. Rampal at the Paris Conservatory, he won competitions in Stresa and Alessandria. In 1983 and 1984 he was awarded the prestigious Prix de Paris.
His debut to international level took place in 1984 at the age of twenty-five when he was introduced to overseas audiences from Luciano Pavarotti in the memorable concert at Madison Square Gardens in New York and together with whom he undertook an intense collaboration in the following years among which were the unforgettable concerts at Hyde Park in London in 1990, Central Park in New York in 1993, the Eiffel Tower in Paris and Red Square in Moscow. His career is enriched by major concerts and tours in Europe, Japan, South America, the United States and around the world; he performs in the most prestigious theaters and from concert halls from La Scala in Milan to Carnegie Hall in New York alongside such artists as Pretre, Giulini, Metha, Krivine, Sutherland, Bonynge, Rampal, Rojdestvenski, Levine, Lu-Ja, Ughi, Sado, Semkov, and such orchestras as the Royal Philharmonic, Berlin Symphony, Munchner Rundfunkorchester, London Philharmonia, New York Philharmonic, Rai of Turin, Dallas Symphony, and Los Angeles Philharmonic. In 1991 the President of the Republic awarded him the honorary title of Cavaliere while in 2003 he was awarded the title of Officer of Merit of the Italian Republic.
He performs world premieres of new compositions for flute and orchestra specially written for his instrument from composers including Carlo Boccadoro, Fabrizio Festa, Ennio Morricone, Shigeaki Saegusa.
His artistic activity is also enriched by collaborations with Luciano Pavarotti, Elton John, James Taylor, Bradford Marsalis and the legendary Ian Anderson leader of Jethro Tull.

Discography includes the Vivaldi and Mercadante flute concertos (Decca) with the English Chamber Orchestra conducted from J.P. Rampal; the disc "Andrea Griminelli′s Cinema Italiano" where the most famous Italian movie soundtracks, rearranged from Bacalov and Morricone, are from him reinterpreted together to Sting, Pavarotti, Lucio Dalla, Deborah Harry, Filippa Giordano.
In 1989 he won a Grammy Award with the CD "Live in Modena, Piazza Grande."
In 2005-2006 he concentrated on an intense record production with Decca label: he recorded theOpera Omnia for flute by W..to.Mozart together with the Camerata Salzburg under the direction of Sir Roger Norrington, a CD with music of the Italian 19th century for flute and guitar together to Filomena Moretti, he records Beethoven and Schubert′s compositions for flute and piano with Gianluca Cascioli and Rossini′s Quartets for wind quartet.
to December 2006 his last recording of the quartets for flute and strings with the Keller Quartet was released on the Decca label. Last concert tours in 2006 included a tour of South America together with the Italian guitarist Emanuele Segre in the main cities of Chile, Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil and a concert to Caracas with the "Simón Bolívar" Youth Orchestra under the direction of Maestro Gustavo Dudamel.
In September 2007 he was awarded the post of President of the Superior Institute of Musical Studies "to. Peri" of Reggio Emilia and in January 2008 that of President of the Musical Institute "Claudio Merulo" of Castelnuovo Monti (R.E.)
In 2008 she performs together with thearpist Luisa Prandina; with the Orchestre Symphonique du Nancy; at the Hanoi Opera House on the occasion of the concerts for the Hennessy Concert Series; she performs during the concert to Petra, a concert in honor of Maestro Luciano Pavarotti that was later broadcast on Retequattro; in 2009 he began to actively collaborating with Andrea Bocelli performing all over the world and participating to memorable concerts including to Naples in the Piazza del Plebiscito, to Rome at the Colosseum, in major cities in South America, the United States and Europe. He performs in Japan with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Naoto Otomo; also with Decca label, he records Boccherini's Quintets together with the Cremona Quartet with whom he has performed in several European cities.
In 2010 he is a member of the jury at the Carl Nielsen International Flute Competition held in Denmark; he is engaged in a tour in Southeast Asia (Tokyo, Seoul, Hong Kong, Taipei, Singapore) where he will return soon adding major Japanese cities as stops on the new tour. He is participating in the closing concert of the world championships in South Africa.
