Fred Hersch Trio
Concerto
Pianist and composer Fred Hersch -- proclaimed "the most astonishingly innovative pianist in jazz in the last decade" from Vanity Fair, "an elegant force of musical invention" from The L.to. Times, and "a living legend" from The New Yorker - he has earned a place among the great names in contemporary world jazz. With fifteen Grammy nominations to his credit, Hersch has earned the most prestigious awards in jazz, including Doris Duke Artist in 2016, Jazz Pianist of the Year from the Jazz Journalists Association in 2016 and 2018, and the Prix Honorem de Jazz Lifetime Achievement Award from the Acádemie Charles Cros in 2017. Skilled at reinventing the classical jazz repertoire with fresh ideas and extraordinary technique, Hersch seems to be completely indifferent to genres, a genuine free hitter he has charted his own path without yielding to successful fads and trends, preferring to virtuosity the emotional and emotional side of music. A music in which tradition and innovation, lyricism and energy, jazz language and classical culture merge.
At Festival dei Due Mondi he appears with the princely lineup of modern jazz, the trio, involving Drew Gress on double bass and Joey Baron on drums, musicians whom Hersch regularly from many years. With the Richmond drummer he plays from all the time, suffice it to say that his recording debut featured him in a trio with Charlie Haden and, indeed, with Joey Baron. His meeting with Drew Gress is documented on the 1992 album Dancing in the Dark, and on that was Tom Rainey on drums. Two great artists who alternated several times alongside Hersch and who have since played a lot together in different formations, consolidating the quality of a formidable rhythm section, among the most effective around.
