CAROSELLO STORICO DEL 4° REGGIMENTO DEI CARABINIERI A CAVALLO
The 4th Carabinieri Regiment to Cavallo constitutes the only and last fully mounted specialized regiment of the Italian Armed Forces.
Heir to the glorious equestrian and historical traditions of the Carabinieri Corps, the Regiment carries out activities of institution, protection and order of public safety, mainly through the use of the Corps' quadrupeds. Thus, patrols are carried out to horseback in urban green areas, in archaeological zones and near sensitive targets, patrols in inaccessible areas of the entire national territory, concurrence in the performance of law and order services, representation and honor services at the main institutional headquarters. In addition to these activities, the Regiment, by means of the Squadron Group, performs the famous Historical Carousel, a riding essay and synthesis of the training achieved by the horses and riders of the Arma.
The Historical Carousel is inspired by the ancient chivalric tournaments of the 1300s and celebrates, in particular, the historic Charge of Pastrengo, which occurred in the eponymous battle on April 30, 1848, during the First Italian War of Independence.
The Carabinieri Corps Historical Carousel is a fluid and harmonious alternation of handling figures performed by the Squadrons with great skill and expertise in different formations, the fundamental component of which is the quadrille. Four pairs side by side in the execution of the figures move like one horse taking precise care of every change of direction and gait to keep the quadrille compact and orderly. The harmonious succession of figures, trim and composure of horses and riders are the result of the intense training that is carried out daily by the Carabinieri of the Regiment to achieve the highest expression of the pair.
As part of the ordinal restructuring of the Mobile Departments of the Armed Forces, the 4th Carabinieri Regiment to Cavallo was established on April 1, 1963, framed within the 11th Mechanized Carabinieri Brigade. As of Oct. 1, 2007, the Regiment restored its former name of 4th Carabinieri Regiment to Cavallo.
On April 30, 2015, on the anniversary of the charge of Pastrengo, at a ceremony attended by Commander General of the Carabinieri Corps General Tullio Del Sette, the Chief of Defense Staff, Army General Claudio Graziano, decorated the Banner of the 4th Carabinieri Regiment to Cavallo with the Bronze Medal of Merit of the Carabinieri Corps for meritorious institutional activities carried out by the Department from 1963 to 2015. Today the Regiment consists of from 273 Carabinieri and 239 horses.
The 4th Regiment's Fanfare to Cavallo is the oldest fully mounted musical unit, heir to the initial 12 buglers with whom the first Fanfare to Cavallo was established in 1820 to Turin. The ensemble also performs from solo at major events in Italy and abroad and is an integral part of the Historic Carousel, in which it accompanies the Squadrons in their evolutions.
