ROBERT CARSEN
L’OPERA DEL MENDICANTE
Rather than aopera per se, The Beggar´s Opera is a play interspersed from about sixty ballads and melodies, "hits" of the era, some of them written from famous composers such as Purcell and Händel. In interpreting this tale that, no less effectively than_ Les Misérables_, deals with capitalist greed and social inequality, this production, directed from Robert Carsen, becomes an opportunity to rediscover John Gay´s satirical text and the talented improvisation skills of the musicians of Les Arts Florissants who are able to bring the musical score to life to each performance, imprinting their own style, as happens in the jazz interpretation of musical pieces.
Written from John Gay in 1728, The Beggar 's Opera is widely recognized as the first musical comedy in history, as well as being some 300 years ahead of the current fashion for "jukebox" productions, which are based on plots built around to hit tunes. Gay in fact took some of the most famous tunes of his time, both classical and popular, and turned them into a violently satirical tale set among thieves, pimps and prostitutes in London. L'opera was a great success from its first performance in 1728, and from has since been the subject of countless theatrical, musical and film adaptations. It explores a cynical world in which capitalist greed, crime and social inequality are the order of the day. All the politicians and officials described in the story are, by definition, corrupt, and to get by to they have no choice but to be conniving.
Sound familiar? Indeed, not much has changed from when 'opera debuted, and even today the themes of The Beggar'sopera are ones that continue to rage, obsessively, in television and film. In this production we hope to emulate the transgressive mood and endless energy of the original. Just as Gay makes to one of his characters say at the beginning of Act III, with a razor-sharp remark, "Lions, wolves and vultures do not live together in hordes or flocks. Of all animals from prey, only man is sociable. Each hunts his neighbor, yet we live together."

Les Arts Florissants is a world-renowned ensemble of singers and instrumentalists specializing in the performance of Baroque music on period instruments. Founded in 1979 by French-American harpsichordist and conductor William Christie, the Ensemble, which took its name from a short opera by Marc-Antoine Charpentier, has played a pioneering role in the revival of the baroque repertoire to long neglected (including the rediscovery of countless treasures that were among the collections of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France). Today that repertoire is widely represented and appreciated. It is not only French music of the time of the reign of Louis XIV, but also more generally European music of the 17th and 18th centuries. The Ensemble is directed from William Christie who, since 2007 has regularly entrusted the conductor´s baton to British tenor Paul Agnew. Since the 1987 production of Lully´s Atys at the Opéra Comique in Paris, triumphantly revived to May 2011, it is on opera stages that Les Arts Florissants enjoys its greatest successes. Les Arts Florissants enjoys equal recognition in the from concert halls, as confirmed by the acclaimed concerts and semi-staged operas and oratorios. In each season, Les Arts Florissants performs in about 100 concerts and opera performances in France--Philharmonie de Paris, where it is resident, Théâtre de Caen, Opéra Comique, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Château de Versailles, as well as in numerous festivals. The Ensemble is also a true ambassador of French culture abroad, being regularly invited to New York, London, Brussels, Vienna, Madrid, Barcelona, Moscow and many other places. Les Arts Florissants has an impressive discography, with nearly 100 recordings (CDs and DVDs) and a collection produced in collaboration with the harmonia mundi label, under the musical direction of William Christie and Paul Agnew. In recent years, Les Arts Florissants has launched numerous educational programs for young musicians. The most emblematic is Le Jardin des Voix Academy: created in 2002, it is held every two years and has already brought a considerable number of new singers into the spotlight. The Arts Flo Juniors program, launched in 2007, allows conservatory students to join the orchestra and chorus for the duration of an entire production, from the first day of rehearsals to the final performance. And finally, the collaboration between William Christie, Les Arts Florissants and the Juilliard School in New York, which has enabled a fruitful artistic exchange between the United States and France since 2007. Les Arts Florissants also organizes numerous events with the aim of developing new audiences at the Philharmonie de Paris, in Vendée, France, and around the world. Tied to the seasonal program, these events are designed for beginning musicians and non-musicians, both adults and children. In 2012, William Christie and Les Arts Florissants created the festival "Dans les Jardins de William Christie," in collaboration with the Conseil départemental de la Vendée. The festival is an annual event that brings together artists from Les Arts Florissants, Juilliard School students and finalists from Le Jardin des Voix for concerts and _promenades musicales _in the gardens created from William Christie to Thiré, Vendée. In addition to the festival, Les Arts Florissants works with the endowed fund of "Les Jardins de Musique de William Christie en Vendée" to create a permanent cultural venue to Thiré. This link was strengthened in 2017 through a number of noteworthy events: the establishment of Le Jardin des Voix to Thiré, the creation of a Spring Festival (Festival de Printemps) directed from Paul Agnew, a new annual event at Fontevraud Abbey, and the official designation of "Centre culturel de Rencontre" for Les Arts Florissants and Les Jardins de William Christie - an award that recognizes projects that unite creation, heritage, and cultural transmission.
