Synopsis

The title of the play is already indicative of its content Mussolini: I defend myself! The authors have imagined that a revived Benito Mussolini called to to answer on some crucial moments of his 20-year period could assert the political, historical and personal reasons for his behavior. It opens with the meeting in Piazza Sansepolcro to Milan in 1919 during which the Fasci di Combattimento were founded; the murder of Giacomo Matteotti; the so-called 'fascistissime' laws with which a true dictatorial regime began; the racial laws of 1938; the entry into the war in 1940; and, finally, the meeting of the Grand Council on July 25, 1943 from which Mussolini emerged politically dead. Massimo Popolizio plays the role of Mussolini; Professor Emilio Gentile, one of the greatest historians of fascism, supports the prosecution; Corrado Augias leads the discussion. Interestingly, many of the arguments supported from Mussolini are drawn from the papers he himself had prepared for his own defense before an American court to which he hoped to turn himself in. Things later turned out very differently, as is well known.
