Synopsis

In its national premiere at the Spoleto 60 Festival, Memoirs of Adriana is a play--on the verge of beginning.... In fact, in front of the closed door of Adriana Asti's dressing room, another, seemingly unplanned performance goes on instead.

A figure appears in the dark: "She will not come. I know her. Much better than she knows herself..." and it will be she, this figure, to telling about the Adriana who does not want to enter the scene, who flees while staying where she is, who by showing herself hides, who by forgetting remembers, who sings to be alone.

An actress on stage must become a character to succeed to talk about herself: it is a deception, perhaps a necessity.

One more provocation, one more escape.

Fantasies, thoughts, stories come to life, mingling with theater.

to recounting are not only the episodes of a long career, the anxieties of the stage, encounters with the greatest theater and film directors, disguises and nudity, levity and madness.

to telling is the very mechanism of this show, the choice to appear without revealing oneself, to look from out almost with detachment, pouring irony and anger, irritation and tenderness onto that other self.

Inside this mechanism in which no one plays just his part, there is a theater director who is ashamed of his lion's tail, there is a technician who wishes he did not feel like a chicken who is actually a chicken, there is an admirer who collects memories.

And above all there is her, and there is the other: one entangled in the stage boards, the other in the dressing room, to looking in the mirror and searching for a new makeup. Always to feeling out of place, only to discover that perhaps the only place is the theater, because it is totally illusory.

ANDRÉE RUTH SHAMMAH

Andrée Ruth Shammah's artistic history began at the Piccolo Teatro in Milan with Giorgio Strehler and Paolo Grassi, but it took shape with the opening of the Pier Lombardo Hall, now the Franco Parenti Theater - founded in 1973 together with other artists and intellectuals such as Franco Parenti, Giovanni Testori, Dante Isella and Gian Maurizio Fercioni - which became from from the very beginning a cultural reference point for the city of Milan, characterized by an innovative idea: not only a place for performances, but a meeting point and comparison of city culture. Since 1989 she has been the sole manager of the Franco Parenti Theater Cooperative, which became a Social Enterprise in 2012. She is its artistic director, animator, organizer and impresario, and her work is constantly careful to to safeguard the level of quality and cultural coherence that lies at the origins of the theater's birth. Over the course of her long career, she has signed more than one hundred stage directions (many of which are now in the history of Italian theater), from the Testorian Trilogy to the most recent Gli Innamorati by Goldoni, A Doll's House by Ibsen with Filippo Timi and The Imaginary Sick Man by Molière with Gioele Dix, The Work of Living by Hanoch Levin with Carlo Cecchi, _Memorie di Adriana _with Adriana Asti and Cita to ciegas by Argentine playwright Mario Diament. She has also signed the direction of theatrical projects on video for RAI and several opera productions, two of them, Kagel´s Varieté and Donizetti´s L´Elisir d´amore, for the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. Her numerous awards include the Montblanc de la Culture Arts Patronage Award in 2011, the 2015 Paolo Emilio Poesio Critic Award from the National Association of Theatre Critics, and the Marisa Bellisario Golden Apple Award in 2016. For her intellectual restlessness, for her questioning of everything, which, to times, becomes a creative approach and research method in her artistic projects and directions, Andrée Ruth Shammah holds a unique place in the Italian theater scene.
