La seconde surprise de l’amour
Written from Marivaux in 1727 for the Comédiens-Français, it is being revived today from prominent actors eager to explore new artistic territories. The play begins with the sigh of a distressed lady. The Marquise is from recently widowed: "There is no more consolation for me," she declares to her frightened maid. The Chevalier has also lost his love. Angelica, locked up in a convent to avoid a forced marriage, can never be his, and the honest knight plans to confine himself deep in his province, to put an end to a life of suffering.Found for absolutely trivial reasons, the two discover each other, "acknowledge" their pain. And at that very moment a question arises that seems to impassion Marivaux: how does love come about? How does it happen that Cupid succeeds to in shooting his arrow? The encounter between the Marquise and the Chevalier unfolds on a more complex warp, in which other relationships develop, first and foremost, in counterpoint to the aristocratic spheres and of a completely different register, that between the servants Limette and Lubin.Marivaux and Bondy find themselves, out from of all time, to recognizing that social conditions, refinement of approaches or language matter little: there exists, in the deepest part of the human being, despite all the civilizations of the world, an irreducible, primitive, animal side, made of instincts, drives, desires. And therein lies the fascination.
