Synopsis

"...Europe is nothing anymore; Europe is just a name; diluting itself, Europe has disintegrated and is dying, not because it is too closed, but because it is too open..."

Locked in a Sarajevo hotel room that had housed him 20 years earlier, assailed by memories of the past, a man, "probably a writer," ponders to aloud. He has only two at to prepare a speech for the commemorations of the outbreak of war in 1914. One hundred years have passed since the great world conflict. And just twenty from the one, on a smaller scale, that the Balkan city witnessed and martyred. But inspiration is slow to to come, and questions about what to say about this Europe of contradictory values, often uncaring in its choices, prevent him from finding the flow of words. A linear, almost sparse plot and two at of intense monologue to tackle major topical issues: this is how French philosopher Bernard-Henri Lévy decided to talk about Europe, in a play that is a long reflection on the identity of the Old Continent, its demons, its contradictions but also its highest aspirations.

"I chose theater as a literary genre because it allows for direct political intervention. On stage goes the inner monologue of the main character, in the two at where he has to write his speech. There is everything that goes through his mind, mild and serious things at once, a philosophical concept from Heidegger and the smile of a beloved woman, until he has an epiphany that brings him out of the impasse."

BERNARD- HENRI LÉVY

is a French philosopher and one of the most respected and widely read writers in Europe. He is the author of more than 30 books, including works of philosophy, fiction, and biographies. _American Vertigo: Traveling America in the Footsteps of Tocqueville _was a "New York Times bestseller" in 2006. This was followed by the English-language books Left in Dark Times: to Stand Against the New Barbarism in 2008 and, with Michel Houellebecq, _Public Enemies: Dueling Writers Take on Each Other and the World _in 2011. Published in 2013, Les Aventures de la Verité - Peinture et philosophie, explored the historical interaction between philosophy and art. The book was written on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name that Lévy curated for Fondation Maeght to Saint Paul de Vence in 2013. His show, Hotel Europe, which premiered to Sarajevo on June 27, 2014, presented at the 58th Festival dei Due Mondi, was a rallying cry about the crisis facing the European project and the dream behind it.
