KAMP
Hotel Modern theatre company
A large scale model of the Auschwitz camp fills the stage: overcrowded barracks, a railroad track, an entrance gate with the inscription "Arbeit Macht Frei" (Work makes you free). The Hotel Modern theater company attempts to imagine the unimaginable: the largest mass murder in history, committed in a purpose-built city. The model of the camp is brought to life on stage with thousands of tiny 8-centimeter "puppets" made to by hand representing the prisoners and their executioners. Performers move around the model like giant war reporters, filming the horrific events with miniature cameras; the audience becomes the witness.
Since its premiere in 2005 Kamp has been performed the 19 countries and 49 cities worldwide, including New York, Adelaide and Tokyo.

Dutch theater company Hotel Modern mixes visual art, theater, drama, music, film, model-making and performance in their evocative productions. In their performances, scale models play an important role. They are used, literally, to see the world from a macro perspective. Hotel Modern's approach is unique in the world of theater, allowing their actors to put to focus on their subjects from completely different perspectives.
