The exhibition _Domenico Gnoli. Drawings for the Theater 1951-1955 _is part of the series of exhibition and publishing projects promoted by the Marignoli Foundation of Montecorona di Spoleto, which have the characteristics of a "study." It is in fact, an exhibition that proposes a specific period of the production of Domenico Gnoli (Rome, 1933 - New York, 1970), one of the most important Italian artists of the twentieth century: the creation of costume and set designs made from 1951 to 1955, years in which the artist devoted himself to theatrical work in the major capitals of European theater, Rome, Paris and London. This period of time predates the phase in which the artist devoted himself exclusively to painting and drawing. About seventy sketches are presented in the Spoleto exhibition. The works on display all come from the Domenico Gnoli Archive in Rome and include: the drawings for the posters for the theatrical version of _Chéri _by Colette produced by the Andreina Pagnani Company and staged at the Teatro Eliseo to Rome (1951); the drawings for Carlo Gozzi'sopera Re Cervo (1953); the scenery and costumes for _La Belle au Bois _by Jules Supervielle requested from the artist from Jean-Louis Barrault (1954); the designs for the scenery and costumes for _As You Like It _by William Shakespeare directed from Robert Helpmann at the Old Vic Theatre in London (1955); and sketches for a balcony set of Romeo and Juliet (1955).
