Synopsis

The first text by award-winning Scottish playwright David Harrower reveals in its invented language, and in the reflection revolving around the very nature of language, a power with strong contemporary resonance. Andrée Ruth Shammah's direction invades the boundaries of the rural and archaic universe outlined by the author, from the perspective of the search for a powerful experience, where the investigation and discovery of the pronunciation of the Word reveal the purest origin of theater.

The scene, signed from Margherita Palli, is developed on two levels, telling both the rural context in which the story revolving around the three characters is set, through the presence on stage of scale models of the places of the text, acted by the actors themselves, and its contemporary echo with a stage space characterized from a strong stylization. It will be the videos, in collaboration with Luca Scarzella, as well as Michele Tadini's music and Camilla Piccioni's lighting, that will accompany the spectator on a journey that moves from an almost philological realism toward an abstraction of feeling.

Eva Riccobono, playing the Young Woman, whose name will never be pronounced (but written down without the audience being able to read it), brings to the stage, stimulated in her physicality by Isa Traversi's to body work, the freshness and purity of a female character caught in her formative journey. The male performers, Alberto Astorri, as William, the Young Woman's husband, and Pietro Micci, the miller Gilbert who will seduce the protagonist's mind in an unsurprising way, present two spheres of the masculine that become symbols of two diametrically opposed worlds, eras and sensibilities.

An unusual show in the artistic journey of Andrée Ruth Shammah, who takes up the challenge from this text for which she immediately felt a strong fascination for the power of the writing, poetic and carnal at the same time, and for the design of the three characters, three autonomous lives, three solitudes to comparison so primitive and original.

ANDRÉE RUTH SHAMMAH

Andrée Ruth Shammah's artistic history began at the Piccolo Teatro in Milan with Giorgio Strehler and Paolo Grassi, but it took shape with the opening of the Pier Lombardo Hall, now the Franco Parenti Theater - founded in 1973 together with other artists and intellectuals such as Franco Parenti, Giovanni Testori, Dante Isella and Gian Maurizio Fercioni - which became from from the very beginning a cultural reference point for the city of Milan, characterized by an innovative idea: not only a place for performances, but a meeting point and comparison of city culture. Since 1989 she has been the sole manager of the Franco Parenti Theater Cooperative, which became a Social Enterprise in 2012. She is its artistic director, animator, organizer and impresario, and her work is constantly careful to to safeguard the level of quality and cultural coherence that lies at the origins of the theater's birth. Over the course of her long career, she has signed more than one hundred stage directions (many of which are now in the history of Italian theater), from the Testorian Trilogy to the most recent Gli Innamorati by Goldoni, A Doll's House by Ibsen with Filippo Timi and The Imaginary Sick Man by Molière with Gioele Dix, The Work of Living by Hanoch Levin with Carlo Cecchi, _Memorie di Adriana _with Adriana Asti and Cita to ciegas by Argentine playwright Mario Diament. She has also signed the direction of theatrical projects on video for RAI and several opera productions, two of them, Kagel´s Varieté and Donizetti´s L´Elisir d´amore, for the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. Her numerous awards include the Montblanc de la Culture Arts Patronage Award in 2011, the 2015 Paolo Emilio Poesio Critic Award from the National Association of Theatre Critics, and the Marisa Bellisario Golden Apple Award in 2016. For her intellectual restlessness, for her questioning of everything, which, to times, becomes a creative approach and research method in her artistic projects and directions, Andrée Ruth Shammah holds a unique place in the Italian theater scene.
