“Guardavo le macerie e immaginavo il futuro”
When design, the kind that excites, meets the Umbrian territory.
It is called Canapa Nera "I was looking at the rubble and imagining the future" the installation created by the Umbria Region, a project that sees the Pietro Vannucci Academy of Fine Arts directed from Paolo Belardi working with the Milan atelier of artist Daniela Gerini.
An icy two-sided wall to tell the story of a brave people whose economy is poised for revival. There is the gray, memory of the urban stone of the Basilica of St. Benedict to Norcia, and then there are the explosive colors of the bloom of Pian Grande. Two sides of the same opera linked from a subtle and exciting common thread. An installation that comes from research that is not only scientific, but also artistic.
Canapa N era is the perfect crasis between the Nera River and the durable fiber, the processing of which is part of the knowledge of the Umbrian territory. In particular, the Apennine ridge that runs through the territory, is from always one of the most dedicated Italian regions to the cultivation of the plant. Not to case right here is based the Hemp Museum of Sant'Anatolia di Narco, which, in addition to a vast historical documentation on its use, houses a production center where hemp is materially processed to give life to innovative and experimental prototypes. With hemp raw materials, textiles, paper, plastics, paints, fuels and even a very high quality edible oil can be produced cleanly and cost-effectively. Today, for example, hemp is widely used in home construction in the context of environmentally sustainable architecture. If it is true that the reconstruction of post-earthquake Umbria requires a change of pace from "where was, how was" to a reflection on architectural quality and the need for a new culture of the use of materials from employ in the future, why not address the reconstruction, raising the local economy, thanks to hemp? Not only a rebuilding of houses and churches, but also the reaffirmation of trust in people. In this delicate process that is reconstruction, the conditions must be found so that a community, after suffering trauma, returns to to look to the future with renewed energy and hope. Dwelling is not only a material act ("house in motion"), but it is also an immaterial act ("house in emotion"). Similarly, the task of reconstruction is not only to restore a house, but it is also to cherish an identity. Ferrying memories and hopes beyond the emergency.
