Andrea de Carvalho - Circus Errans
Acrobats, horsemen, fakirs, clowns, freaks.
In the circular arena, with each appearance, some subjects take risks, playing with identity, pushing the body beyond limits; hovering between wonder and desolation, dust and stars, angels and demons. Circus action catapults the athlete across borders, mocking the laws and the force of gravity of ordinary mortals.
The Circus above all is a monument to the absurd, an anachronistic apparition but also an open plaza for nomadism in the midst of the concrete jungle of our metropolises. In this age of globalization and discomfort, the traveling circus is a test of resistance, of transgression of the new order, transforming the place where it is located into an enchanted universe.
This is the image that Andrea de Carvalho wants to use by recreating in the imaginary real characters, the rowdy band of those who every night measure themselves against the cruelty of the rink and its magical rituality.
Basic element of the wall works will be photography: a series of contemporary artists will be invited to be photographed disguised from circus characters in an epic of mutant identity. Scenic carpets of the so-called circus will be made with these photos.
Sculptures will represent acrobats, horsemen, fakirs, creating a series of works assembled from heterogeneous materials (photos, objects, ceramics, materials however poor or from everyday life...) .
Andrea de Carvalho´s circus is a balancing act between the lightness of dream and the depth of memory. In her works is evoked the magical space in which found objects, symbologies sublimated into pure signs and color, even intimate memories are articulated into a compact and sumptuous whole. The Brazilian artist´s ability to manipulate and the sunniness with which she constructs surprising images, as if they already existed in a fluid state, as if disparate objects had been created and then dispersed in the world in the expectation of being brought together to create the image (the Circus), finds in these works its highest result.
