La MaMa Spoleto Open
The intuition guiding the compositional journey in Threshold starts from the two opposite etymological meanings present in the word "tradition," from one part understood as "tra-dare," that is, to deliver over, and on the other "betray" understood as betrayal that would be put in place at the moment when the same act of passing from hand to hand, from knowledge to knowledge, from generation to generation takes place. It is in this short-circuit between the need to investigate and safeguard the cultural emergence of traditional languages that are dying out, and to understand the new mechanisms of that atavistic betrayal, typical of a knowledge that is passed on, that lies the concept and semantic core of the duo's new work. Threshold is a possible road, a necessary path, a simple hypothesis mixed with the personal artistic and sonic sensibilities of Savoretti and Mina, ready to be questioned, naked before the choices made.
Flutist Fabio Mina and percussionist Francesco Savoretti use their instruments, seeking their most hidden characteristics and extending the possibilities with live electronics, effects, synthesizers, pushing beyond genres, between improvisation and composition, creating an enveloping, unpredictable music in which contrasting elements dialogue with each other. Here is the idea encapsulated in the concept of Threshold, understood as the Boundary/Threshold of a new artistic language that looks to tradition but pushes beyond it, bringing it closer to other languages and crossing the boundary of pre-established styles.
