L’OSPEDALE DELLE OPERE D’ARTE FERITE DAL TERREMOTO
VISITE GUIDATE
The project to build the Santo Chiodo Depot began after the 1997 earthquake, with the aim of providing the area with an earthquake-resistant structure, equipped with appropriate facilities (racks, shelving, drawers, archives area, environment control, laboratory space, offices, intrusion detection systems) in which to house artworks taken from risk situations due to natural disasters. Completed in 2008, to following the seismic crisis that began in 2016, about 7,000 works of art and hundreds of boxes with archaeological material, mainly from from museums, churches, palaces of the Valnerina, were housed there. The works, upon arrival, are secured with the elimination of sources of degradation, then conservative cataloging is carried out, minimal maintenance is performed and the necessary restoration actions are defined.
The itinerary of the visit includes both the depot and the emergency laboratory. It is an experience that allows you to appreciate the great cultural heritage from the Valnerina, to get an idea of the enormous work done by the staff of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, with the help of the Police, the Fire Department, Civil Defense and its volunteers, to save everything that can be saved, and to touch with your own hands the care, passion and expertise with which they are working to return to the wounded territories their souls and the signs of their civilization.
