The Teatro Nuovo Gian Carlo Menotti hosts the Metamorphosis project, born from the initiative of the Fondazione Casa dello Spirito e delle Arti, which seeks to give dignity and job opportunities to people who are in situations of severe social hardship: together on stage the Quartetto del Mare and the Piccola Orchestra dei Popoli, both active in the social and volunteer fields, bring the experiences they witness to the stage. to starting with the instruments: the wood of the violins, viola and cello played by the Quartetto del Mare comes from boats used by migrants who landed to Lampedusa.
The first "Violin of the Sea" was made by inmates of the Violin Making and Carpentry Workshop at the Milan-Opera Prison with a technique that was used in England in the 1500s to make violas from gamba. Nicola Piovani, the evening's special guest, is among the first musicians to join the initiative by dedicating to this instrument the Canto del legno, a piece premiered for Pope Francis by the first violin of the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia Carlo Parazzoli, which will also be performed in this concert. Thanks to the skilled hands of the luthiers involved and the inmates of some Italian Penitentiary Institutions, the wood of about 60 boats from the Favarolo pier in Lampedusa has been transformed into musical instruments, with the aim of creating a true "Orchestra of the Sea."
The Little Orchestra of the Peoples is an artistic workshop of the Casa dello Spirito e delle Arti Foundation that brings together musicians belonging to to different cultures and religions: from traditional Turkish and Lebanese chants to to Japanese ones, from David Maria Turoldo's set to music poetry to Argentine tango and Balkan melodies. The concert closes with a tribute to Maestro Nicola Piovani and a performance of the song "Life is Beautiful."
The concert, which raises funds to for the very benefit of the Casa dello Spirito e delle Arti Foundation, is a unique opportunity for participation and cross-cultural dialogue: to Spoleto brings together two musical worlds, that of the Western classical tradition and the multiethnic world of non-European traditions.
Proceeds from the evening will be donated to the Spirit and Arts House Foundation.
Metamorphosis Project

The Foundation's projects, such as "Metamorphosis" and "The Sense of Bread," are supported from public and private institutions and from artist friends: Ennio Morricone, along with to Mimmo Paladino, were the first to donate one of theirs opera. Ennio Morricone, in 2012 donated to the Foundation "The Voice of the Drowned," music dedicated to deceased and missing migrants at sea.
