LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN
ROBERTO CAPUCCI
In the year that marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven (Bonn, Dec. 16, 1770 - Vienna, March 26, 1827), the Carlo Felice Foundation of Genoa presents in stage form the rare complete performance of the only ballet in Beethoven's catalog, offered in an evocative and unprecedented combination: The Creatures of Prometheus / The Creatures of Capucci. The project achieves a formidable encounter between the arts, celebrating the creative genius of two historic protagonists as distant in time as they are close in inspiration. from one side Ludwig van Beethoven with his only score to choreographic destination: the two-act ballet The Creatures ofPrometheus (Die Geschöpfe des Prometheus) op. 43, commissioned by the Imperial Theater of Vienna for choreography by Salvatore Viganò, which debuted at the Burgtheater in 1801. On the other, Roberto Capucci, master of international haute couture, an innovator of style capable of making clothes dialogue with nature, art and architecture, here a protagonist with a series of sketches with a strong visual impact, from recently displayed in the exhibition "Capucci Dionysiac. Drawings for the Theater" at the Uffizi in Florence. The two artistic processes meet on this occasion in their independent nature, distant in history and inspirational source: parallel lines that intersect in the stage space in an unusual union from to which new possibilities and visions are born. The two worlds meet in a metaphorical dimension: that of musical power inspired by mythology - as a representation of the archetypes that shape the human psyche - and that of "other" creatures that like effluvia appear only to disappear in the dreamlike imagination drawing from the same archetypal matrix.
Prometheus, ancient and rebellious titan, thief of sparks and dispenser of fire: a distant myth that tells of a humanity under construction, destined for civilization and progress through the divine gifts of love and beauty. It was precisely the "men of Prometheus" who were the focus of inspiration for Salvatore Viganò, a celebrated Italian choreographer engaged in the early nineteenth century in the staging of the ballet _The Creatures of Prometheus _with original music by Ludwig van Beethoven. The subject matter took up precisely the classical fable of Prometheus, "a noble spirit who, having found the men of his time in a state of ignorance, refined them in the sciences and the arts and trained them in manners."
On the musical level, Beethoven, faithfully followed the original outline indicated from Viganò (16 episodes to to which is added the well-known _Ouverture _and an Introduction); not only that, he succeeded in animating the draperies of the candid neoclassical framework with an instrumentation of daring refinement and generous with concertante elements.
In 2020, the Carlo Felice Foundation of Genoa pays homage to the musical genius of Ludwig van Beethoven with this concert in stage form to curated by Daniele Cipriani, an unprecedented encounter between music and high fashion. On the occasion of the concert, performed by the Carlo Felice Theater Orchestra and accompanied by Simona Bucci's stage movements, the production kicked off with the exceptional creation of 15 costumes from Roberto Capucci's original sketches exhibited in 2018 at the Uffizi in Florence: a surprising repertoire of men's costumes inspired by the idea of a dreamlike staging.
Music and fashion together in a dual and original tribute to the creative genius and imaginative power of art.
