Isabelle Adjani
I mormorii dell’anima
I discovered the world of "reading" fairly recently. It was relatively foreign to me. Not as a spectator, but as an actress. It was a pleasure of an unknown nature. I used to read Racine, or Duras.... It was like a revelation, which produced a new exaltation.
You enter the text vibrantly, between the thrill of listening to the audience and the throb of diction. It is the listening that guides you. And it is so unexpected to hear people so captivated from one voice, to sometimes only subtly accompanied by music.
These readings are fleeting and unforgettable moments. They stay with us forever. When I talk about texts that have moved me in this way, I leave no evidence to the audience, only my enthusiasm. I think this is very beautiful, and in a way it is part of the oral tradition.
If the audience were not there, I would not exist. But if I am not there, they continue to to exist! One cannot act without an audience. I myself, when I go to theater as a spectator, expect something to happen within me, for someone to convey a desire, an emotion, a thought, or to change my thinking, to reveal something about me in front of the world.
The audience that comes to to see you act is an audience that trusts you, so that at least part of that moment of theater makes a difference. That allows you to enter another reality that puts everyday life in parentheses. Those are precious moments.
Can you live without it? I don't think so.
