Synopsis

"I love animals from always and, in particular, I have a soft spot for the variety that nature gives us. My family knows something about it... from little girl I used to bring to home all the stray cats and dogs I could find, but also worms, frogs and insects. And then I read a lot of books about animals and took several biology courses in college.

Having started to working first as a model and then as an actress, this passion remained somewhat muted. But when I started to writing and to directing films, biology became my main source of inspiration.

Thanks to the encouragement of actor and director Robert Redford, who believes strongly in experimental and independent filmmaking and also has a strong interest in Nature, I have made a series of short films about animals: Green Porno is about reproduction, Seduce Me is about courtship strategies, and Mammas is about the various ways of being a mother in nature.

"What artists do," says Redford to about my films, "is say serious things in a funny and understandable way.

The great Jean Claude Carrière is writing the theatrical version of this opera and, to about the wonders of nature, claims that it is "impossible to be bored: biology is the most beautiful show in the world."

Isabella Rossellini

Who invented sex? Why and how?

Isabella Rossellini and Jean-Claude Carrière try to answering to these questions by observing the natural world, from pachyderms to insects.

But how many surprises! How many strange things! Males being eaten after breeding, a male putting his own sperm directly into the female's vagina to replace that of another, wild orgies, fights to the death, dances, seductions, extravagances, inexplicable stunts, deadly enigmas, perversions, males in sweet expectation, babies eaten alive... It almost seems as if nature voluntarily multiplies tracks to muddy the waters. It almost seems as if life, in order to allow reproduction, participates to a dangerous and chaotic game, the rules of which have been established from no one knows who and change from species to species.

to open paws along the river waiting for sperm... Salmon mate in the river where they were born just before they move on and die. The termite queen may spawn workers and soldiers according to the needs of the colony... Snails, as hermaphrodites, become aroused with a stinger before mating. The female of a water earthworm encloses herself in a shell with ten holes: only one is the right one. The male has to spread his sperm in each hole and, after fulfilling his duty, dies of exhaustion.

Life, broadcast to whatever the cost, offers a fascinating and frightening spectacle that begs the question: what about us? What is our position?

The text, written from me, will be read and acted from Isabella Rossellini. During the lecture on reproduction in the animal world, 2-minute short films directed from Isabella Rossellini will be screened, in which the actress wears the roles of a fly, a duck, a squid and an insect. She herself will be to talking about them live. The animals chosen for the short films already made are snail, earthworm, fly, shrimp, deadly spider, praying mantis, anchovy and hemipen snake.

Jean-Claude Carrière

Here is a great actress who has a crazy project in mind: to stage the sexuality of animals... She has already made dozens of films on this theme, but now she wants to bring the topic to theater, helped by the pen of Jean-Claude Carrière, and all she needs is a rehearsal. I meet her and say yes without hesitation; she is regal, passionate, delightful, and I can already sense that we are going to have some serious fun!

When I met Isabella Rossellini, I discovered a strong personality completely immersed in her project, but above all, an original, integral, determined artist with a playful creative madness that allows her to propose anything without ever becoming excessive.

In her scent there is a memory of woods and sunshine ... she has the lightness of a child and the absence of a dreamer, but she struggles strenuously against the random improvisation of feelings ... and the more her body constrains her, the more she soars and forces disobedience, with a magic that comes from her poise, her mysterious beauty seasoned from a joyful laughter. With a unique musicality that comes from "her accents," her silences and the graceful hesitation with which she switches from one language to another!

Together we talk about varied animal sexuality, and I discover that this theme goes beyond, surprises, reflects the world and its diversity, and is ultimately sophisticated. Since everything is essential to share with the viewer the density of the project, Isabella rightly proposes images, puppets, costumes and mimes... and suddenly the laughter grows as she shows me the effort made from a worm to reproduce...

This is how his work will be: he will show you by all possible means the extraordinary world of love that surrounds us, the beauty of the animal world, the immense variety of love approaches, and perhaps in this way we will also think a little about our own!
