Synopsis

Rimas Tuminas does not aspire to to stage a full adaptation of Pushkin's novel in verse. He chooses, as the main theme, the story of Tatyana's love for Onegin.

The play unfolds through the memories and imaginations of the characters, and, as in a journey, the viewer is transferred to different places, from Onegin's room to his estate in the countryside, then to the Larin's neighboring house, to Moscow, and finally back to his room. The range of events changes constantly, from noisy celebrations to solitary meditations, from crowded scenes to personal memories. And everything is brought together, from the past, just like the fragments of Tatyana's love letter, framed and hanging on the wall next to Onegin's chair.

The images in memory are split between past and present, between reality and imagination. Therefore, on stage, there are two Onegins: the older one, who remembers the events, and the younger one, who experiences them firsthand. There are also two Lenskys: the younger, as he was at the time of the events described in the past, and the other, an imaginary white-haired friend of Onegin, the one whom Lensky might have been if he had not been killed in a duel. There is another character also, not described from Pushkin, but as transported from the years of his youth. He is a retired hussar, charming but disabled by the war, intelligent but penniless, a drunkard who argues about everything. He is granted the voice of the author, and the right to intervene in the action so from he can express... "the icy intimations of reason and the echoes of a grieving heart."

Eugene Onegin has been called "an encyclopedia of Russian life" in the 19th century: Pushkin's main stories are a vivid portrait of the everyday life, ideas, moods, and habits of the Russian people in the capital and the provinces. Rimas Tuminas' production goes far beyond storytelling and leaves much room for reflection.

I wanted to break stereotypes. While working on the production of Eugene Onegin, I was looking for a symphony of meanings, to get closer to the emotional and musical harmony of the novel. At the same time, I knew how important it was to avoid excessive sentimentality. Eugene Onegin is Light, Beauty. Theater in general is a place of Peace and its Mission is to bring harmony to the world through love. The true meaning of Art is to amplify ethical values, virtues, in an effort to make the world a brighter place.
