Concerto finale Spoleto64 copia

Synopsis

The libretto of L'italiana in Algeri seems to have originated from the story of Antonietta Frapolli, kidnapped by corsairs in 1805 and returned to Italy after living in the harem of the bey of Algiers: in Gioachino Rossini's music we find that fascination with the Orient that ran through the arts throughout the 19th century.

In Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's symphonic poem, the violin is the voice of Sheherazade, the Persian queen who saves her life each night-for One Thousand and One Nights-by becoming the mythical teller of tales so beautiful from that she convinces her sultan, her husband, to listen to the sequel the next day. Today, one hundred and twenty years later, in 1001 Nights in the Harem, Turkish composer Fazıl Say retells the same story in four pictures for violin and orchestra: the harem and all the variety of female characters that inhabit it, an evening of feasting and wild dancing, the indolence of the next morning, a reminiscence with oriental sounds.

The soundscape in which violin soloist Friedemann Eichhorn moves is punctuated from some traditional Turkish instruments such as kudüm, bendir, glockenspiel and harp, in this grand finale of the Festival entrusted to the Orchestra of the 'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia with Antonio Pappano conducting.
