from Francis Poulenc's La Voix Humaine to the American symphonic repertoire, with the formidable presence of Barbara Hannigan and music director Antonio Pappano on the stage of Piazza Duomo: continues to giving unmissable appointments the residency of the Orchestra of the 'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia to Spoleto.
The Academy has been to Spoleto since its inaugural concert, for which it joins the Budapest Festival Orchestra with the Choir's participation in Philip Glass' oratorio The Passion of Ramakrishna. The Orchestra shares the stage at Piazza Duomo with Barbara Hannigan, a world star whose voice is among the most original and in-demand on the contemporary opera scene. A "globetrotting soprano-chameleon," as La Repubblica calls her, Hannigan is not only a singer of unquestionable vocal gifts, from some years she can often be found on the podium as a conductor, sometimes combining conducting with singing. During her performances, the body merges with the music. "I do not interpret the music, I just have to be it [...] It is natural for me as a singer, as an actress and as a conductor to become a "channel" for the composer's score."
After the success of last year's from chamber music review events, Antonio Pappano is the star of the concert at the Teatro Caio Melisso Spazio Carla Fendi: a unique opportunity to hear the Maestro also in his role as pianist.
Gustav Mahler, Claude Debussy, Igor Stravinsky, Arturo Toscanini, Herbert von Karajan, Claudio Abbado, Leonard Bernstein and Kirill Petrenko are just a few of the greats who conducted the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia from when it began, first in Italy in 1908, to dealing exclusively with symphonic repertoire. A history of great names and great performances is now in the hands of Antonio Pappano, music director since 2005. A guest at major international festivals and winner of numerous recording awards, in recent years under Pappano's direction it has reaffirmed its place among international orchestras (also in 2020 named among the top ten according to BBC Music Magazine). Antonio Pappano again this year conducts the final concert at Piazza Duomo, the highlight that closes the curtain on each edition of the Festival. Barbara Hannigan accompanies him on this evening as the soloist in Samuel Barber's Knoxville: Summer of 1915, a particularly beautiful and rarely performed work based on James Agee's novel to Death in the Family: a child lying in the summer grass, to Knoxville in Tennessee, gazes up at the sky and lets his thoughts chase the joys and sorrows of life. Overseas suggestions, a theme that runs through the two worlds of the 2022 programming, are also echoed in the second half of the concert with a performance of the quintessential "American" symphony, Aaron Copland's Third.
The Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia was the first in Italy to to devote itself exclusively to the symphonic repertoire, promoting premieres of 20th-century masterpieces. Since 1908 to today it has collaborated with the greatest musicians of the century: it has been conducted by from Mahler, Debussy, Strauss, Stravinsky, Toscanini, Furtwängler, De Sabata, Karajan, Abbado and Kirill Petrenko, among others. Its permanent conductors have been Molinari, Ferrara, Previtali, Markevitch, Schippers, Sinopoli, Gatti, Chunge, and Sir Antonio Pappano (2005-2023), who will be succeeded in October 2024 as the new Music Director by Englishman Daniel Harding. From 1983 to 1990 Leonard Bernstein was its Honorary President. The Orchestra and Chorus have been guests at major festivals: the Proms in London, the Lucerne Festivals, the White Nights in San Pietroburgo, Salzburg, and the most prestigious concert halls from including the Philharmonie in Berlin, Musikverein in Vienna, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Royal Albert Hall in London, Salle Pleyel in Paris, Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Carnegie Hall in New York. The origins of the centuries-old Accademia di Santa Cecilia are linked to the practice of choral singing: in the second half of the 1500s, a number of Chapel Masters and Cantors came together in association, effectively founding the Accademia. But it was not until the late 19th century that the Choir of theAccademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia began to assume a stable structure and to participate in performances of polyphonic music and the great symphonic-vocal repertoire. The choir is currently directed from Piero Monti. Its activities are carried out in the Academy's concert seasons, flanking the orchestra in the performance of great classical and modern symphonic-choral works. Numerous tours have also taken place with the orchestra at international festivals: London Proms, Salzburg Festival, Enescu Festival in Bucharest, Saint Denis Festival, Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto. The Chorus has also collaborated with other prestigious international orchestras such as the Schleswig-Holstein Orchestra; Orchestra della Rai of Turin; Berliner Philharmoniker, Kirov Theater Orchestra, Lucerne Festival Orchestra, Wiener Philharmoniker, Orchestre National de France, Concertgebouw Orchestra.
