BEETHOVEN E DINTORNI
CONCERTI DELLA SERA
_"Freedom and progress are the goal of art as, for that matter, of life itself." _
from a letter from Beethoven to Archduke Rudolf
Building on the critical and public success of the 2013 editions, with Debussy and Surroundings, and 2014, with Chopin and Surroundings, this year the Festival dedicates to Beethoven twenty appointments that unite, under a single thread, the historic Midday Concerts, in the Church of St. Euphemia, to the evening ones in the Cloister of San Nicolò. The centerpiece of the project is Beethoven, around whom are composers of the time who were somewhat overshadowed by his gigantic figure, but who have now become the subject of renewed interest in order to better understand and delve into the cultural humus in which the personality of one of the greatest composers in history came to to be delineated.
Starting from Beethoven, the listener follows a path ranging from Hummel, Clementi and Moscheles to to virtually unknown composers, such as Ferdinand Ries, his pupil and secretary, Carl Czerny, a faithful pupil, Friedrich Kuhlau, an early performer, and Cherubini, whom Beethoven esteemed most of all among his contemporaries.
By Beethoven, in addition to the complete Piano Sonatas and the most famous piano pages, little-visited compositions such as the Sonata for Piano and Horn, the 9 Contradances WoO 14 and Wo15, the Fantasia op.77 and unknown pieces such as the Prelude in F minor Wo55, the Allegretto in C minor Wo53, and the Bagatelle in C minor WoO52 are performed to outline the personality of a different Beethoven from the somewhat conventional one of "music titan."
