Carla Bruni
I've tasted death, now I live in gratitude
Music cures my anxiety
by Silvia Fumarola
Sensitive, witty, non-conformist. Carla Bruni, 56, former supermodel former Première Dame of France, singer-songwriter, laughs when they call her 'icy' or 'snob'. He recounts his life, from choices to illness, with intensity and lightness. Two children, Aurélien, 22, had with the philosopher Raphael Enthoven, and Giulia, 12, born from a bond with Nicolas Sarkozy, are amazed by the echo of the interview with Belve. “It was successful, there has been a lot of talk about it.”
He will be a guest on July 5 at the Spoleto Festival, for a concert at the Roman Theater.
“I've never been there,” she says, “but my parents used to come there all the time, my father was a composer. Since I was a child, Spoleto has been ringing in my ears. It's a novelty but it's as if it were written in memory. My mother wants to come: 'It will be a wonderful experience with you. '”
What does music give her?
“A lot, and it's also my job. From a human point of view it is a refuge, it solves anxiety... As a composer and music lover, it makes me feel good.”
She had the privilege of choosing: as a young girl what did she dream of doing?
“I dreamt of music, I was childish and lonely, for me loneliness is not a wound. I like to read, write, play. It would be nice to be 18 years old: the band in the garage, when you feel the energy, the urgency, that thing there, desperate and full of hope. Instead, I'm 56 years old, writing alone, sitting at my desk, with a cup of green tea.”
Don't you think that “that desperate, hopeful thing” will eventually stay inside?
“He's right. You choose where you put your energy, often when you are young you run away, now we are big young people.”
Does your age weigh on you?
“Um, a little bit. My mom, who is 94 years old, says: “If only you were 60 years old: one is still very young, you can dance at night, make love in the morning.” If it reflects on us, that's the way it is.”
After 'Belve' you clarified yourself, did you talk to your sister Valeria?
“My sister and I don't do anything relegated to the public. As an actress she is wonderful, as a director she has a unique style. The question is: to whom do the stories belong? To everyone, even if I can see his talent even more, when he tells things foreign to his family. She knows how I think, and with my sisters, even Consuelo (daughter of Carla's natural father, Maurizio Remmert) we always talk. There is geographical distance but our souls are close.”
Did you imagine that the interview would have such an echo?
“No, it's crazy. Francesca Fagnani is very good, vital. I don't go on TV, I'm scared and I don't like to look at myself. A friend told me, “Look at David Letterman.” I don't know if it's a problem of narcissism, but I disgust myself, I judge myself: “What a stupid look, how did you dress?”. I am separated from my image.”
Strange saying from a former model.
“That's the point. When you put it straight, a picture of Richard Avedon, it's fine. On TV I don't recognize myself: one speaks, moves, changes. I see myself again and I get discouraged. The funny joke you wanted to say comes to you the next day.”
