ROMEO E GIULIETTA
A timeless jewel of classical ballet, Romeo and Juliet is a 'opera centered on three major themes: life, love and death. This was, in 1997, the first ballet created from Youri Vàmos, a world-renowned choreographer, for the Ballett Deutsche Oper am Rhein. Vàmos disjuncts the tragic love story from the Italian Renaissance to set it in the 1920s and 1930s, the period in which Prokofiev had composedopera. The absolute joie de vivre and humanity of the characters, witty wit, rhythm and passion permeate the entire ballet, interspersed from poignant and emotional love scenes. The choreographer conceived this ballet, first of all, as the story of two young people who, to in spite of their age and naivety, follow their deepest passions, heedless of the consequences. To express such power of feelings, the two lead performers, in addition to technical perfection in dance, must also show great acting skills on stage.

He was born to Budapest where he completed his dance studies at his city's State Ballet School. After an initial assignment as a soloist for the HungarianOpera State Ballet, he obtained a contract as first soloist at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich. from then, almost his entire professional career took place in German-speaking Europe. After his career as a solo dancer ended, he worked as director of the corps de ballet of the Dortmund, Bonn and Basel theaters. His choreographies are distinguished by creativity, exceptional dramaturgical sense and great musicality. to in spite of all his innovations, the Hungarian choreographer remains faithful to the classical heritage, which gives foundation to his art. His artistic credo of presenting traditional subjects by bringing them back in line with the times is the reason for his success at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, the most important company in North Rhine-Westphalia, which for 13 years carried Vàmos' imprint. Jochen Schmidt's book, "Tanzgeschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts in einem Band" (History of 20th Century Dance in One Volume) describes Youri Vámos as "perhaps the best choreographic storyteller of the present." In 2001 Youri Vámos is appointed Honorary Professor at the Budapest Academy of Dance. In 2007 he is awarded the Order of Merit of the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia. He has been working as an independent choreographer since 2009, and numerous are his creations for major theaters in Europe and around the world.
