L’AMOR SACRO & L’AMOR PROFANO
The Choir "St. Benedict" - city of Norcia, formed from about 25 elements, continues a tradition present in the area, which has established roots from centuries. The repertoire ranges from sacred and secular polyphony toOpera choirs to popular music. The latter aspect has enabled it to promote, in collaboration with the Monti Sibillini National Park Authority, the "Rassegna Itinerante di Canto Popolare."
In September 2004, the Choir hired the current maestro as its artistic director and undertook a constant and painstaking study focused on classical polyphony, sacred music for choir and orchestra, and choirs d'opera with special attention to the study of vocalism. This work has enabled the Choir to participate, for the first time in its history, in a Vocal Competition and win first prize overall in its category - International Competition "City of Sangemini" XVIII edition, December 2007.
The choir has participated to numerous festivals and concerts in Italy, Germany, Holland and Belgium, collaborating, in addition, with musical institutions in the realization of significant premieres, such as in July 2007 the world premiere, performed in the city of Norcia, of Maestro Jacob de Haan's Cantica de Sancto Benedicto for Soli, Choir and Wind Orchestra, under the direction of Maestro Filippo Salemmi, and to Den Haag (Holland).
The choir is, in addition, regularly invited to animate liturgical celebrations in St. Peter's Basilica to Rome and the Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi.
