Synopsis

The Philharmonic Orchestra of Medellín (Filarmed) has 35 years of history and its main goal is the dissemination of symphonic music in the local and national territory. It is a platform for young musicians who land from different cultural formations and find the best way to practice their profession here, while inspiring the entire urban musical ecosystem. In 2002 the Filarmed was declared a cultural heritage from by the Medellín Council and the city's municipal government.

The concert program consists of two works specially commissioned by the Cartagena International Music Festival, on the occasion of its 13th edition (2019), and four pieces by Colombian composers of the 20th and 21st centuries, with clear references to the traditional repertoire of the South American country.

The works by Carlo Pedini and Jorge Pinzon, premiered in Italy at the Spoleto Festival, develop from a common given theme: the world of natural elements. H2O Concert for piano and string orchestra, finished writing in October 2018, is divided into 5 movements and recalls the natural evolutionary cycle of water. Rapsodia to los cuatro elementos, para violonchelo y orquesta de cuerdas, refers to the 4 elements that, ancient philosophy held to be the fundamental constituents of matter, of the world. Beyond the common source of inspiration, each composer develops his or her work using an entirely personal musical language that hints at the two composers' different backgrounds and cultural backgrounds. European that of Pedini, South American that of Pinzon.

_Tres danzas colombianas _by Luis Fernando "el chino" León, born to Bogotá, is a work based on a free reinterpretation, in a modern key, of Colombia's rich folkloric tradition. The three dances preserve, however, in full, the spirit and movements typical of the native dances of different regions of Colombia. Los Adios by Juan David Osorio, a composer from Medellín, is aopera, for violin and string orchestra, written in 2012, just for the Philharmonic Orchestra of Medellin. The Serenata en Chocontá (Torbellino) by Álex Tovar, from Bogotá, is also a reinterpretation of a folk dance and song originating in some areas of Colombia (Boyacá, Cundinamarca, Santander). Luis Antonio Calvo is considered one of Colombia's most important composers. A native of the Santander area, he led a difficult life in the years to straddling the late 19th and mid-20th centuries. Secretos is a waltz composed in his typical musical language rooted in popular music.

The concert program well interprets the spirit that guides the current collaboration between the International Music Festival of Cartagena and the Festival dei Due Mondi of Spoleto: the exchange of artistic, technical, and cultural experiences and the desire to create opportunities to learn more about the traditions of the two countries.
