From Mozambique, where she was born, to the Mouraria neighbourhood of Lisbon, where she grew up, to the entire world, which has proclaimed her to be one of the most exciting voices around: during her twenty-year career, her passion for fado and her distinctive musical personality have taken the Portuguese singer Mariza to the international fore. Thousands of fans have gathered for her performances at legendary concerts in front of Lisbon’s Belém Tower, London’s Barbican Centre or New York’s Carnegie Hall. She has won Latin Grammys and appeared on the David Letterman Show.

Her contemporary voice embodies the circumstances of inconstant fortune, the ironies of fate, the excruciating pain of love, the crises of absence and estrangement, the deep sobs of despair, the whims of the heart and the sorrowful sadness of the saudade of a people, of a belonging, of an art such as fado.

With a career that echoes the success of her muse and compatriot Amália Rodrigues, in twenty years Mariza has racked up platinum records and brought traditional Portuguese song to the world’s most important venues, from the Sydney Opera House to Barcelona’s Palau de la Música.

She celebrates her twenty-year career with a special concert in Spoleto’s Piazza Duomo featuring songs from her latest album, Mariza Sings Amália, that is a double tribute: to the traditional Portuguese music genre that has been named an intangible heritage of humanity, and to Amália Rodrigues, the “queen of Fado”. Without losing her own distinctive identity, Mariza has cultivated the roots of her musical heritage and opened it up to the world.
