Based on Purcell’s celebrated opera Dido and Aeneas, and drawing on different inspirations including literature (from Virgil’s Aeneid to Shakespeare’s Sonnets), cinema, documentaries and art, Le Crocodile trompeur / Didon et Enée by Samuel Achache and Jeanne Candel masterfully weaves myth and tragedy, music and theatre into an experimental “contemporary farce” that defies categorsiation.

“The first time I heard Dido’s lament I was at the conservatory, and the memory still sends shivers down my spine,” says Jeanne Candel. “The story is simple, straightforward, with no frills: he arrives, they fall in love, he leaves, she dies. What interests me most of all is working out how to represent the events, by avoiding naturalism and the prosaic “I love you, I hate you”, and finding allegories that tap into the scenes in a more suggestive way.”

In this sprawling musical fresco, madness and whimsy constitute the pulsating beat of this work.

The scenery is liberally inspired by the space between allegory and reality represented in Brueghel’s The Sense of Hearing, while the destructured music enhances the characters’ feelings. “To love, to leave, to devour, to let oneself die”.

Conducted by Florent Hubert, the orchestra is so fully integrated into the theatrical action in which the musicians become actors, and the actors reshape the original libretto and score. On stage, they combine speech with song, French with English, sentimentality and cerebralism with comedy.
