La Voix Humane
lyric tragedy on one act
Singer and conductor, Barbara Hannigan is endowed with versatility that is out of the ordinary. At Spoleto, she performs the role of Elle, a woman who Francis Poulenc depicts as at the height of pain, obsessed and rejected, trapped between reality and fantasy. “I had always thought that Elle’s forays into fantasy, delusion and control,” Hannigan comments, “made La Voix Humaine a highly possible sing-conduct performance”.
The performance is preceded with the melancholy strains of Richard Strauss’ Metamorphosen for 23 solo strings. Before singing the role of “Elle” and conducting in the Poulenc, she will also direct the orchestra in Strauss’s solemn reflection on the mundane and the divine.
Running through the entire programme, the theme of transformation is explored on many levels. Barbara Hannigan’s unconventional technique emphasises the psychological drama, her conducting gestures shaping her vocality, and her vocal expressivity influencing the movements of her hands.
