On tracks of Spoleto's thermal system - the ancient baths of Torasio

Rendezvous in front of the Teatro Nuovo Giancarlo Menotti.

It is well known that to Spoleto in Roman times had thermal baths, i.e., those places with pools of hot, natural or heated water, which the (well-to-do) Romans adored. And they used a lot. As a place of hygiene, rest, recreation, meeting and as a gymnastic gymnasium, in some places. In fact, the street that continues Via Giustolo and arrives at the Gardens of the Horse Chestnut is called Via delle Terme. Perhaps there were some near Teatro Romano, older and more public. Then after the construction of the theater there should have been the other, private ones, owned by a certain Caius Torasius Severus. The latter show remains, not normally visible, under the parking lot of the Tribunal. But they were supposedly very extensive, coming to occupy today's areas of Palazzo Pianciani and Teatro Menotti. Upon accessing them, one can see the remains of the furnace that heated the water and the bases of the columns that supported the tanks. But the entire area corresponding to the parking lot shows vestiges. They are from the 2nd century A.D., with restorations in the 4th (from Constantius II) and 6th centuries (from Theodoric).

They were found during the construction of the church of St. Philip Neri.

Spoleto Longobarda, from the basilica of San Salvatore to the mosaics of Palazzo Mauri

Meet at Piazzale Salmi (Basilica of San Salvatore)

The establishment of the Lombard Duchy of Spoleto is placed shortly after the arrival of the Lombards in Italy (568 AD). Recent archaeological excavations have brought to light some significant evidence of the postclassical age, such as a complex of rooms to thermal destination near the forum, under palazzo Mauri with extraordinary flooring to mosaic. In 2005, a baptistery attributable to the 8th century with a polychrome mosaic pavement was brought to light during the renovation of palazzo Pianciani. from time the existence of a Lombard quarter has been hypothesized from place in the northern sector of the city, at the amphitheater already redeveloped in a defensive-military function in the Gothic age. The most important evidence of the Lombard age is concentrated on the area of the Ciciano Hill, where, in addition to the basilica of St. Savior, there was the ecclesia baptismalis of St. Michael the Archangel and the funerary area of St. Pontian, which has returned the funerary slab of the Lombard Agipertus. The historical framework of reference to the Duchy of Spoleto is returned by the collection of objects on display at the Rocca at the National Museum of the Duchy of Spoleto.

Pre-Roman Spoleto, tracks of a history 2,700 years old

Rendezvous at Cecili Street (Cyclopean Walls).

From the first settlement of the Umbrians surrounded by polygonal walls to the finds of Piazza d´Armi on display at the National Archaeological Museum. A journey on tracks of the very ancient Italic population told through the remains of the walls in opera polygonal and by the extraordinary finds, recently discovered during excavations, kept at the National Archaeological Museum and Teatro Romano in Spoleto. In the summer of 2012, as part of the planned X-ray analysis of the artifacts from Spoleto's Piazza d'Armi necropolis, the metal finds were taken to Ancona to the restoration laboratory of the former Soprintendenza ai Beni Archeologici delle Marche. Thus it was that on Aug. 4 what had been classified as simple iron "mace heads" were revealed for what they really were, namely a pair of iron and bronze scepters depicting highly complex scenes unparalleled in the Italian and European scene, belonging to the first king of Spoleto and dated to the seventh century to.C.
