Synopsis

"Roland Petit was like a father from the artistic point of view, because he knew how to bring out my expressive potential, while still being very strict and severe."

Eleonora Abbagnato

Discovery from Roland Petit, Eleonora Abbagnato, étoile at the Opéra de Paris, dedicates to him this Soirée Roland Petit. As she herself tells us, "Roland Petit has been like a father from the artistic point of view"; to honor him she has called beside to herself many other stars of the great dance family.

Of Petit, a great choreographer of the 20th century, we remember the rigor of academic ballet on which his opera rests (and to to which he pays homage in Ma Pavlova), made seductive from a bubbly verve from music-hall or Hollywood musical (on both fronts he worked to long), to whose atmospheres Cheek to Cheek refers us. He was often inspired by important literary works (underlying ballets such as Proust, ou les intermittences du coeur or his masterpiece Carmen). He was an author who, as journalist Irène Lidova had to to say about him, managed to be "at once frivolous and serious, passionate and cruel."

Above all else, Roland Petit was always in tune with the times he was going through: from post-war existentialism (of which _Le Jeune Homme et la Mort _is a masterful example), to ballets that celebrated the great youth movements and whose scent we smell in Notre-Dame de Paris, inspired by Victor Hugo's novel.

If his historical muse was his life partner Zizi Jeanmaire, Petit finds, to decades later, an ideal interpreter for his works in Eleonora Abbagnato. to see her, Eleonora is the opposite of the gamine brunette; blond like the first "Giselle," the Italian Carlotta Grisi, Eleonora Abbagnato embodies the romantic ideal of the ethereal and angelic dancer, yet with a thoroughly modern physique and interpretive sensibility. Like Zizi and Petit's other dancers before her, she is a child of her time, embodying its aesthetic canons and, above all, its soul.

A quality that for Roland Petit is of primary importance, so much so that his own autobiography, J'ai dansé sur le flots (1993) opens with this very maxim: "Un artiste est comme un nuage, il prend les formes du temps" (An artist is like a cloud, he takes the forms of time).
