Synopsis

In Alto Mare is a one-act play written by the great Polish author Slawomir Mrozek in 1961.A text that hinges on the perpetrator-victim relationship in a dead-end situation, it depicts with admirable irony and amusement the absurd and, to sometimes grotesque aspect of existence. It tells the human story of three castaways to aboard a raft: the Big Shipwrecked, the Medium Shipwrecked and the Small Shipwrecked. The three characters are faced with the terrible problem of the lack of food and the consequent need to procure it in the most atrocious way: deciding which one of the three will have to be sacrificed for the survival of the other two.The text unfolds wonderfully supported from a sharp and intelligent irony, without ever lapsing into farce or, even worse, into vulgarity. In its unraveling, it represents a continuous chase between realism and surrealism, between concrete and abstract, between poetic and grotesque.Although it is a piéce that moves on the edge of subtle acuity, it never runs the risk of delving into intellectualistic forms intended for a limited and elitist audience; rather, the text allows for the direct approach and involvement of all kinds of spectators. The staging also includes three musicians who are meant to represent the metaphorical extension of the souls of the three characters.
