Synopsis

Program

Amahl and the nocturnal guests
Introduction, March and Dance
The televisionopera Amahl and the nocturnal guests (Amahle and the visitors) was written in 1951 on commission from NBC.
It was the first time that a television station commissioned aopera from a composer and it was the first time that television experimented with color.
It is a fable-likeopera for which Menotti also wrote the libretto, designed to be aired on Christmas Eve.
It was such a great success that it was aired for several years on the same occasion.

Sebastian
Suite from the ballet
Menotti wrote the ballet Sebastian on his own subject in 1944.
It was the first time he tried his hand at the choreographic genre.
The action takes place to Venice in the 1600s and tells of Sebastian, a servant of two aristocratic sisters who want to prevent the relationship between their own brother and a courtesan with whom Sebastian himself is secretly in love.
To oppose the two sisters' fury, Sebastian does not hesitate to to sacrifice his own life by substituting himself for the wax statue that the wicked women had molded to image of the courtesan and which, once covered from a veil to she had taken away, became the means of directing them against the cruelest evils.
The Suite contains almost all the music of the ballet and consists of seven movements.

Amelia al ballo
Orchestral prelude
L'opera Amelia al ballo, to a libretto written in Italian by the composer himself, is the first major success of Menotti's American operatic career.
The composition of 'opera began during a stay to Vienna in 1936 and was completed the following year in the United States.
At the center of the story is the portrait of a young upper-class woman, bored and interested exclusively to attend to parties and balls. It is a'opera short, one-act play that makes the protagonist's story the emblem of spoiled bourgeois society.

Milan Symphony Orchestra Giuseppe Verdi

The Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi, founded in 1993 from Vladimir Delman, has established itself from several years as one of the most relevant national symphonic ensembles, capable of tackling a repertoire that ranges from Bach to the cornerstones of nineteenth-century symphonism to twentieth-century music. The Orchestra's program schedule includes more than thirty symphonic programs each year, with a layout in which the classics are flanked from less usual pages, as well as some adjoining seasons, such as the "Crescendo in Musica" cycle, an important review for children and young people. From 1999 to 2005, Riccardo Chailly, now Honorary Conductor, served as Music Director.Vladimir Fedoseyev, from the current 2008/2009 season, is Principal Conductor; Wayne Marshall and Helmuth Rilling hold, in the 2008/2009 season, the role of Principal Guest Conductors; Maestro Rudolf Barshai, from many years connected with the Orchestra, has been Conductor Emeritus since the 2006-2007 season, a position held by Carlo Maria Giulini until his passing. Cornist Radovan Vlatkovic and pianist Simone Pedroni, on the other hand, have been present since the 2007/2008 season as Resident Artists.
From the 2009/2010 season, China's Xian Zhang will be Music Director, while Ruben Jais will hold the position of Resident Conductor.
